Yesterday, we got to see the Terra Cotta Warriors at a local museum. They are really interesting! Each warrior has a unique face. During production, there were 100 different face molds, and each face was further "unique-ified" (sorry my brain has left the blog, I know there's a better word, a real word, but I can't think of it right now) Any how, they gave each face different hair styles and mustaches and such, so each warrior has a truly unique appearance. I guess at the time the Emperor was buried, the warriors held real, high quality weapons, but the weapons have since been plundered. They were also originally painted in brightly colored lacquor. I think it's interesting that many of the warriors were found crushed, and were pain-stakingly glued back together, but no one restored the paint, not even on one. I would be very interested to see what they looked like originally.
The other fun part of the day was the "living statue" Terra Cotta Warrior. He was standing in the lobby, and whenever anyone approached him to take a picture, he'd creakily start to move and strike a pose for the photo. The fun part for me watching him was the subtly of his facial expressions, you could tell he loved getting reactions out of people, and that he loved what he was doing. He works as a "living statue" street performer in China, and his favorite job is being a Terra Cotta Warrior. He would also put on short performances through out the day:
This was the opening sequence of the show, the second part was a series of Tai-Chi and fast paced Martial Art moves with a staff, and the third & fourth parts were just fun and silliness geared for the kids, dancing with first one, then two, Terra Cotta dolls attached to his legs and arms. Again, the fun part for me was watching his expression, in one of the dances, he slows down his movement to snail pace again for several bars, and then "BOING!" he's bouncing around again, and that little smile crosses his face again. =)
